The Social Onion series is an ongoing project I started in 2009. It consists of drawing on a singular photographic image of yours truly. Printed on 8.5"x 11" paper, I embellish each photo, using a ball point pen, with features and dress evocative of iconic persons and character types from political and social history along with some recognizable individuals from contemporary pop-culture. In this series I examine a balance that lies within all, a union of opposites, represented here with the bat and bouquet, symbolizing sport, warfare and protection in one hand, with peace, love and chivalry in the other. Created in pairs, there are currently 200+ (and counting) "onion skin" images.
Here is a sampling of some that address the perennial topics of race, politics and gender, among other themes.
